Fripon - Student Film
As the synthesis project of my animation college, one of my first childhood dreams became a reality: making my own movie. Combining my youthful follies with my newly learned professional skills, all bathed in a universe strongly inspired by my childhood video games and my passion for the Fairy Folks.
In this project, I was able to exploit one of my greatest artistic interests: contrast. The characters are expressive and garish but have soft movements. The universe is drastically divided between a warm fairytale-like autumnal hamlet…
...And a weird, colorful underworld, inspired by Tim Burton and Rareware’s Golden Age. The visual development will remain my most memorable step.
I created a world that my character, a mischievous yet endearing trickster, tries hard to recreate in his own image, with the "borrowed" leftovers of a surface that never belonged to him.
The Machine is the cornerstone of the film. A generous design challenge. While the rest of the film was animated by hand, I took this opportunity to introduce myself to cut-out, having been inspired by the technique of Ghibli Studios’ Howl’s Moving Castle.
This film was a demanding but cathartic adventure, which introduced me to the world of animation and which concretized my insatiable taste for creation and tributes to childhood.
